how our beliefs can change our behavior
our mind is a powerful thing .the stories we tell ourselves and things we believe about ourselves can either prevent change from happening or allow new skills to grow.some people think that they were born either smarter, dumb or average but this is a misconception.intelligence comes with practice.
how our beliefs can help us and hurt us
carol Dweck is a researcher at Standford university.she is well known for her work on the fixed mindset vs. growth mindset.she describes the difference between these two mindsets how they impact our performance.
In a fixed mindset, students believe their basic abilities ,their intelligence ,their talents are just fixed and their goals to look smart all the time and to never look dumb.
In a growth mindset, students understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence.they don’t think necessarily think everyone is same or anyone can be Einstein, but they believe everyone can get smarter if they work at it.
for example:if you say,”I am not a math person”then that belief acts as an excuse to avoid practicing math.it hinders your ability to learn ,grow and develop new skills.
Modern researches about our brain…
our brain made up of neurons consist of tiny nerve cells, which multiply together and becomes stronger when we use our brain.you can see a baby.firstly, they just can’t even talk at the beginning.it did not mean that they are stupid .with the passage of time they begin to speak or even walk .this is all because they start practicing and their brain grows stronger and bigger.
modern researches shows that our brain work like a muscles it gets stronger when we use it.
For example; when we lift weight ,our muscles gets bigger and stronger.a person who starts with 20 pounds .after sometime can lift 100 pounds.and when we stop exercising, our muscles gets weaker.same thing is with our brain.the more you challenge your brain to grow the more your brain cells grow.
how our actions changes our beliefs…
In my experience, the only way I know to change the type of person that you belief what you are,to build a new and better identity for yourself,is to do so with small repeated actions.
when I was in school life, many people used to think that I was born dumb as compared to my sister including my own parents.this makes me sad.I know just one thing that hard work never goes wasted ,so I take some baby steps ,made my timetable, starting learning little.Firstly I could hardly follow my timetable. After a couple of weeks of regular learning,I set a goal for me to study 1 hour at least.
I knew I would never be good enough to impress anybody so it didn’t make sense to make speed my goal.I wanted to do something different so, I didn’t quit.
my goal made all the differences.I was still slow but I feel good that at least I start working.I have good days where I would work hard and feel great but I also have lots of bad days where I was tired and just did’t feel like working.but I think bad days were better than good days because they reinforced my goal,I did’t give up.
I got a fourth position in class 9,I feel like working is not about doing the best, but my personal best.I started to think myself as a intelligent student.
I just wanted to stick my one goal ,don’t quit.
“No matter how many mistakes you make or how slow you progress
you are still way ahead of everyone who isn’t trying.”___Tonny robbins.
So often,we overestimate the importance of a single event and underestimate the importance of making better choices on a daily basis.
we felt that getting that job or losing 20 pounds will transform us into a person we want to become .we fall a victim to fixed mindset and think that we are defined by the results.
but when you dedicate yourself to showing up each day and focusing on the habit that forms a better identity ,that’s when you learn and develop.
